American serama thread!

Pictures can totally be deceiving, I agree. I like your little hen. (Pearl right?) if though she isn't posed she is still very cute. And I am glad the frizzles chicks are doing well. My frizzle turned out to be a Cockeral, so his name is now Frizzy not Mimi

Frizzy's chicks are doing well. The ones in the photo are Pearl's; those chicks are now four weeks old (one cockerel and three pullets) and the mother has started another clutch of eggs already! Seramas may not have big broods, but mine breed fast.

Hi! I have 4 hens 4 mo old. Since Christmas day I've been collecting 3 eggs a day. I figured one wasn't laying yet or a couple of them went laying every day. So today I open up to get the eggs and find 7!! How is this possible? 7 eggs from 4 hens in 24 hrs?

Could the eggs have been buried under wood shavings and then uncovered for you to find?

Maybe...that has to be it. But I remember gathering 2 eggs the day before. Anyways I got bigger problems. An outdoor bantam mutt hen got sick this morning and i had to bring her inside...Then a serama hen (the #1 girl) went broody now, she's been upstairs sitting on eggs all day. What should I do? Just let her do it?

If you want chicks let her brood; if not remove the eggs. I got my first serama eggs to hatch last spring, so I'm new to the breed. Do you know if serama will brood an empty nest? Breaking a hen from broodiness is fairly easy-I put them in a smaller cage with no nest-no bedding; just a bare cage. Usually within a few weeks the hen stops being broody, but then the whole cycle starts over. So far I have let my serama brood and hatch chicks-even if it's just one. I am curious though as to whether or not they will brood an empty nest.

Deanna Troi began setting on 7 eggs. I didn't know if they were fertile because she's a young bird who was still running from the roosters.
I moved her inside and we've been getting freezes. I uses a small space heater that severely dries out the room.
I hang a wet towel in the room which dries out in 12 hours. I have been spraying the eggs with water whenever she's off the nest.
I didn't expect much with these wacky conditions but she hatched four of the eggs two days ago.
I just took a pic.

They are very cute. Is the hen a silkied serama? One of my hens has three eggs in her nest already. I find serama a bit odd. My hens continue to care for chicks while they are laying eggs for the next clutch fully weaning the chicks just before they start brooding eggs again. I wonder if this is a usual behavior for serama. My hens also pair up to care for their chicks; each hen accepting all the chicks and the chicks accepting each hen as mother. I have not seen either behavior in the other breeds I have owned over the years.

They are so cute! You seem to make quite a few Silkied Seramas Ra! I've not had any Seramas go broody yet, but I've noticed what you are talking about with my Silkie's, Nchls They go broody and help eachother raise the chicks. The mama starts laying agin like two days after they hatch, and sets again often with chicks still under her. Being queens of broody, I wasn't very surprised. I'm interested to see what the Seramas do.

Yes, they are Silkied Serama.
I sometimes have a hen who will nurture someone else's chicks but they usually peck at them instead.
The meekest hen turns into Godzilla once she hatches chicks. Pity the bird who wanders too close to them.
