American serama thread!

Can I see yall's coop setups? How do you house your Seramas? I want to get some and I'm not sure if I can just put them in with the big girls long term. I did have one who got along great with the big girls, but since then I've heard they need special care. Where do I start?
My seramas are mixed in with the flock. I have a wide variety of sizes.

However, the seramas are easy hawk food, so I do not let them free range. They get escorted to a chicken tractor during the day while the Orpingtons roam the yard.

In winter, I put the seramas inside a pre-fab coop with a small panel heater. The coop is in our screened room/patio. (about the temp of a garage) When it goes below zero, they need to come inside.

Well, I got this chick's gender wrong.

Here was the chick at 3.5 weeks. I thought female.

@homeschoolin momma
Do yours still look like a pair?

I have no idea. The cinnamon one is a girl for sure, but we knew that. This white one is not right. It hasn't grown in weeks despite eating and drinking.

Nothing is growing comb or wattles size.

Meanwhile, cinnamon is growing like a weed.

The light one reminds me a lot of Micro. He was stunted and had about the same size difference with his sisters. (so much smaller!)

The comb of yours looks more red than pink, so I'm guessing male. (This hatch is a 1st for me - 2:1 male ratio.) However, unless he's crowing or gets a sudden burst of comb/wattle growth, keep him around. I truly though Tyrion was male up until she laid her 1st egg. Sometimes they're just tricky.

Its not going to matter at this point. He/she has taken a turn for the worse and I don't think it will make it through the day. I've tried nutridrench, water, food. It did eat a little bread. But yhis is what it looks like now and Phoe is not happy about it.

Sister isn't happy either. Keeps running back and forth to him. Its heartbreaking.

Meanwhile.... Guess who went broody?

IMG_9893.JPG

Well,Yes. In a way BOTH of them are broody. DS's little serama spent the day in the nest box and was making all sorts of grumpy noises. DS was very excited, ran in the house, gathered up about 8 eggs, and slipped them under her.

Here's Teddy's offspring. (Currently nicknamed T2... for Teddy the 2nd) He looks great and has a nicer comb than his father. He crows more, though.

Teddy's crow sounds like "Hicc-up Doo Doo"
T2's crow sounds like "1, 2, 3"

I would really like to keep T2 but Teddy disagrees. He must see T2 as a threat & wants to beat him up. All this guy does is run away and hide from Teddy.

Any suggestions to help them co-exist?

This is my setup for my Seramas this winter. My husband built this frame on wheels, if we get any more nice days I can wheel it out of my heated cellar, the cage can be removed to sit on the ground also. It has a drawer that pulls out for easy cleaning, I keep a blue night time heat light on , if they get cold they go under it. It is 72x30x18, they love all the space. I also put a piece of sod with grass and roots attached in a dish, and water it , they like to scratch around in it. My hubby is the best.
