American serama thread!

And I'm here and I'm sure there are others. So let's start things off again.

This is one of mine. When her eggs failed to hatch I gave her a few cochin bantam chicks to raise. Being her first attempt at nesting I wanted her to raise chicks to complete the reproductive cycle.

She's so cute! I love her tail. Any idea why the eggs failed?

Weather. We had a week of unseasonable cold with temps down in the low teens. About half the eggs were ruined; serama, phoenix, and turkey eggs. Every brooding bird had, at least some, eggs ruined.

I'm also still here.
My most recent serama hatch was Feb 1. I think girl. (5 weeks)
Trying NOT to hatch too many seramas..... but those little eggs are so CUTE.
:idunno They somehow keep finding their way into the incubator.
Yes, looks to be a very nice pullet. I have a few that are younger and the little cockerels already have bigger combs.

And I'm wishing that more would hatch. Between trying to replace birds that were killed by a neighbor dog and for several people wanting to buy, I getting really anxious to have more hatch. We had some severe cold which my coops are not made for, and I lost three clutches to that when the hens got off on break; I guess. Everything here is made to beat the heat as we normally don't have severe cold that hangs on and on.

Mama is so pretty. :love
Thank you for your kind words.

nchls school, I see you are in TN. Which part? I am in Middle Tennessee and would love to find some more seramas. We bought to pair but I'm not sure they are full serama as the seller stated as they are quiet a bit bigger than what you would expect for a serama. They are definitely smaller than standard and even our bantams and have somewhat of a serama pose, but not quiet there, and like I said much bigger than a "coke can". We still love them, but would like true seramas.
My little has ALWAYS liked to pick the smallest of a hatch to be her favorite and the ones she NEEDS when buying chicks. As you know the "runts" are usually small for a reason... with medical issues, not always, but enough times and they end up not making it to full adulthood for whatever reason. So I thought seramas would be perfect for her. They would be tiny and stay tiny for her and still be healthy.

Middle Tenessee also; perhaps a bit south and west-Scotts Hill-20 minutes south of Lexington, TN. The majority of serama are bigger than a coke can; mine weigh between 8 and 14 ounces 12-16 grams at hatch.
I get "Little" as I look for the smallest too. I'm fascinated with tiny. My turkeys are miini. My goats are dwarf. My dogs weigh about ten pounds. There isn't a large chicken on the place... I don't come on BYC much so if you wish, feel free to email: [email protected]

Many people raise serama that are in the C, D, and over because they produce better and more. So pure serama do come in larger sizes. Personally I don't see the point in raising larger serama in that serama are supposed to be the world's smallest breed.

My flock is small-less than 15 birds. I do sell chicks when I have some available.
This picture shows a pair that hatched last night. There's five little ones and they will be for sale when they are two weeks old. I do not sell chicks/ducklings/etc. the are newly hatched. They are fragile at first and I want the people that buy from me to have every chance of success.

If you post or email pictures I would be happy to give an honest opinion on the serama you have.

I learned that lesson the hard way! I had a woman excited about buying seramas. Her kids already had bantams, so I sold them both of my chicks the next day after hatching. I saw the chicks eat & drink, and figured all was good. They put the car's seat-heater on to keep chicks warm on the drive home. The chicks settled into new brooder. That night the kids had a school function and when they came home one was dead. The second died sometime in the night.

Now I wait at least a week before selling any chicks. One reason is because they are more fragile - like quail. The second reason is I'd rather have a chick die in my possession than after a kid falls in love.
