American serama thread!

Okay, again I apologize...new to this thread...but have a Serama question and this may have been asked/answered in the past, but I have not made it through all the past pages as of yet:

I live in Northern Washington (state) and we have fairly cold winters. What is the best temp for Seramas to be kept at? I actually have 6 Serama eggs in the incubator...ready for lockdown on Monday...and they will probably be kept in the house all winter (yes, we spoil our birds). The mature birds we have I am putting in a insulated coop (seperate from my other birds - but same coop - for body heat), thick layer of sand on floor, and I will put a light or heat bulb and possibly a heater of some form for the really cold days/nights. But it would be good information for me to have an "ideal" temp to know where I should be keeping the temp at.

I recognize you from the Washintonian site. We get sub zero weather so I need to make sure they are kept warm. I will kee a light on them and I found a good web site that has "under desk radiant heaters/warmer" - these heaters are for small areas .... I think these would be great on those extra cold nights. I am also concerned because we are hearing this is suppose to be another cold winter and lots of snow...so I want to be ready. Dont want to lose any of the little guys. Thank you. I am going to put a thermometer out there just to be sure that the temp is staying up. I am hoping that with a light bulb or infra red bulb (if I have to) that the sand will absorb heat and help to also keep them warm. Let them get as close or as far as they need to.

Be careful with the heat so you dont have a fire! I had a light fall last year and burn a hole in the floor of 1 pen. I also get a few burnt tails if the bulb is to low.
You gona make it to the show next weekend? There will be birds and eggs for sale.

RedRoosterFarm: Just PMd you actually with similar question. LOL. No, I don't think I can make it to Stevenson. Sure wish I could. I am thinking next year I will get to quite a few more shows. I went to Monroe this year and will get there again next year. I really want to get into showing/breeding. At this point I am still learning and growing and just starting. Will there be Seramas at the show? Orps (I would just about guarntee orps)? Stevenson is quite a ways from me. Gosh....I may have a sudden need to leave town and just go down....

I really want to go.

Trust me, very careful with the light bulbs...and heater idea....I am very fearful of fire. One reason I use sand in my coops instead of hay. If the insulation is as good as I think it is going to be, a good watt light bulb may be enough. I will just have to keep an eye to make sure they are staying warm enough.

I received my eggs from Jerry yesterday. Jerry packed great but the usps did their damage again! Got 37 eggs and 1 had a bad dent so I tossed it and 2 were cracked and then the box had 2 holes like the size of golf balls. Its like they had a bat and tossed the box on it. Im glad Jerry did not write "fragile eggs" or they would of been scrambled. I will put them in the bator today. Wish me luck!

How difficult would it be for a city-bred 11 year old to get into showing Seramas? I have an 11 year old girl who thinks the pictures she's seen of them are the prettiest things ever, but I don't know *anything* about showing.

real easy! Just find a 4H group if thats what ur after. You can keep the birds in the garage or a pen in the yard. My son showed for a while but now i am learning to show and I love when I go to the shows because the kids are so into it and they do great! Go for it!
