American serama thread!

Trust me I have considered it. We are suppose to have high/norm ammount of snow this year.

I don't mean to sound ignorant, and I'm not trying to pry, but where the heck is Omak? I am in NE Kansas and we get some pretty wicked winters here. If it snows a little, and the wind blows (like the wind does in Kansas!) in these hills we get snow drifts as much as 20 feet high! We've had snow right up to the roof of the barn.

Last year we had temps of -18, and combined with the wind chill it was about -50. I didn't loose any chickens to the cold, but I didn't have any seramas at that time. I didn't use any artificial heat, other than on the waterers, but with these guys I think I better at least consider some kind of extra heat when the time comes. I haven't decided what would be the best way.

Gumbii! The lav oegb eggs went on lockdown today and one is pipping already!

Great, they can just come through the doggie door with the dogs and the cats. I have 5 small dogs and 3 cats that come in and out all the time...might as well have the chickens too. My daughter would just love that.

LOL...You are not prying. If you go to the middle of Washington State...then go all the way North to the Canadian border...that is where I am. I am actually 50 miles from the border. Our winters regularly get into the negative numbers. We get some pretty nasty Northern winds. I just worry about them getting cold...I guess I worry about their comfort too. I worry about everything and my kids are getting too old and get irritated when I worry about them...so now I a "over worrying" about my birds.

We get deep snow, usually not too bad of drifts...although we do occasionally get them.

Actually, everyone runs around the yard on a regular basis. The dogs don't bother chickens, neither do the cats. I have 1 cat that goes into the chicken pens to catch mice. When the I have little tiny chicks I don't trust the cats...but tha is just a safety thing...other then that all get along. Although when we sit in the yard for "treat night" for the chickens...the chickens will chase the dogs off if the dogs try to take a treat.....
