American serama thread!

Yeah, but pics don't always 'capture' the birds. It was just a suggestion

I only have 25 Serama and half of those are under 5 months old, so taking one I knew would be DQ'd for weight just to have it 'scored' is something I would do (and have

).

Group question: So what is your cut-off weight for using birds in the breeding pen? The one(s) I have who is/are overweight are just slightly; thankfully I haven't hatched any HUGE birds. But just curious what you all think. Cocks maximum weight is 19.2 and hens maximum is 16.8 (with the +20% overage allowed by the APA/ABA), so when does big become too big?

anything over 19.2 is to big for a cock in scna TTshowing...as for hens bigger means better eggs so id give em some slack..... remember even an a or b bird can throw a D LOL

Yes, but I was asking about breeding since even 2 'D' birds can throw 'A's and micros

If you have a male who is a little heavy but otherwise has good qualities, you wouldn't use him? Remember, I only have 16 adult Seramas (7 males, 9 females) and 4 of the 7 males are 'too big' to show.

lol..... TRUE um i think trying to size them off nicely is the way to go id hate to breed a d to an a .....that is wrong for the hen if smaller and crazy for the roo to try to have to reach LOL

That kind of goes back to my post yesterday (??) about not putting 2 birds with the same 'faults' together. Granted, I try not to keep A's, but if I did have any I probably would put them with bigger males to hopefully minimize the chances of hatching more A's or smaller. I currently have 2 hens (I think and HOPE it's only 2) who probably fall in the 'A' category (I know 1 is 11 ounces at almost a year) and have 1 male who probably does as well. Currently they are together in a group pen but once I get my pair pens done he won't be getting the little girls!

Of the 3 oldest chicks I have from this year (bad year for me on the Serama front

) all 3 look like A's or small B's.

Of course this group has the ONLY females from this year
