American serama thread!

You really need to handle them a lot to tame them down. It shouldn't take too long. I have 2 chicks that were hatched by a hen that were pretty wild. I took them to a show (chick class) and they are completely different birds. They still don't want me to mess with them, but if I try to pet they don't run away screaming.

You can get the 'moist and meaty' dog food to use as treats.

If you use grapes make sure not to do them whole...I have heard of situations of birds choking on them.

Also a favorite at our house:
1. Cooked spaghetti noodles. I dunno...maybe cuz they look like worms.
2. Bread. I tear off small pieces and kind of mush it together a bit.
3. Go to Petco or maybe a local feed store. I got meal worms...this was hilarious..once they figured out what they were...they just went nuts.

So those are the TOP favorites although there are more acceptable treats...these are the favorites at my house.

QUESTION~ I can get all the yogurt I want for my chickens free. Is it a bad thing to feed all the time? I have been mixing it with the feed and the birds go crazy and love it. Can I feed to much? Another question~ How much feed do you fed your birds? do you fed per bird or a group of birds and 1 or 2 times a day? Mine are inside caged and I am feeding 2 times a day and let them eat all they want. Is that a bad thing?

All my birds "free feed' so far meaning that they have access to food all the time. It is easier for me and that way you know they always have food. I do not know about the quantity of yogurt.

Are your in pens and I guess I am trying to figure out about how much to feed per bird per day if its only grain-crumble?

Mine are all free range except the japs, serama & belgians. We put a pail of mixed scratch, seed & lay crumbles in the morning and afternoon - if we get 'mobbed' then we up it a little more. I have almost 80 birds in my yard so guessing the amount is by visual reaction of the birds.

I just set the cup of yogurt in a pen, and they eat what they want. The smaller pens don't eat as much, so I move that cup to another pen when it seems like they're done with it. I don't feed it every day, but they get a couple a week. The Greek yogurt is their favorite.

Yes, mine are all in pens or cages.
