American serama thread!

Ray, have you ever seen my cookie tin warmers? Any size tin will do; just make sure that it's tall enough for a spiral bulb to fit in without touching the metal. I save tins left over on the last days of rummage sales (dirt cheap), and I buy old chandeliers there, too. I save the power cord from anything I throw away, and I assemble it all, McGyver style, with a 13w bulb. You have to let it warm up a bit and then show the birds how warm it is, and then they sit there all day! I like to make the hole in the side a little big. That way I can see the light shining through, and I know if it's burnt out.

He is soooo pretty. Thank goodness it was nothing serious. I also got a patchwork quilt hatch.........so many different color combos. That is why I am hatching more eggs from this trio to see if there is any consistency at all.

I have 3 or 4 that color.
My kids are home this next 2 weeks. I plan to recruit them to help get pictures & weights etc. My Seramas came from Laura's Castle Delights, Mary Robbins, Carla Cole & Pampered Poultry.

I am looking for some help or advice. I just recieved a reverse trio of serama that are in bad shape. Extremely under weight and one has an eye infection, The eye is swollen shut and had dried matter over it. We treated the eye with terramycin ointment. I have them under a heat lamp and two of the three are eating. I fed the third some parrot hand feeding formula. Any suggestions for treatment and diet that will put weight on would be greatly appreciated. We bought them for one of our older 4-H members. Not a great way to get started with seramas.

Thank you in advance

On the one that is not eating... I he sick otherwise? Is it the one with the eye infection? Are his poops normal? A little more info might be helpful. Why were they underweight? Were they not being fed, not getting the right feed. wormy, poor conditions? If they need wormed I wouldn't worm them while they are still this stressed.

You might try some yogurt or other types of treats to see if you can get him going. Vitamins and electrolytes in the water is good, too. If they just aren't "thriving" they may need some medicated feed. There are a number of things you can do. Get them healthy first then work on putting the weight on. It won't happen overnight.

We won a pair on an auction on BYC. The seller included the second cockerl at no cost. We didnt know he was coming. The were shipped on wednesday morning and I picked them up at the main post office at 9:30 last night. So we have only had them a day. All three have yellowis colored poop, not runny, just off colored. The bird with the eye infection is the one in the worst shape. I cant tell you why they are in such poor condition. I notified the seller that they had arrived and that I was very concerned with their condition. I have not heard back yet.

Does it look like there is an injury to his eye? Perhaps the two cockerells got into a squabble in shipping. Gee. I would be pretty darn upset if I received sick birds in a shipment. It sounds like you are doing the right things. I wish I had more advice for you. It is just so hard to tell what is wrong over the internet. Maybe someone else can chime in with some other ideas.

Good luck. I hope they all get better.

****I hope they didn't throw that extra cockerell in just BECAUSE he was sick!*****
