American serama thread!

They were great birds but took me weeks to get rid of the mites. The hen had them all over her face and neck. The hen was gotten by a coon but the rooster fell lame then got worse and worse

I know it is difficult; especially when it is one thing after another. For the very first time in 40 or so years I had to deal with mites this summer. What a pain. It happens to the best of us no matter how clean things are kept.

I knew that the mites didn't come from me because I've NEVER had mites on any birds. So i figured they had to come from him. I now have birds from Jodi Hartman and they are great. I will eventually need new genetics for breeding though

At what age can you tell the gender of seramas? I have one that is about 5 weeks old... How soon will I be able to tell gender?

Anytime birds are outside there is a risk of parasites getting on them.

Comparing your chick with mine the same age (4 weeks) I would say pullet. But keep in mind, birds mature at their own rate to some degree; some growing faster and some more slowly. Sexing at this age can lead to mistakes. However, looks like a pullet right now.
