American serama thread!

I have several 8 day old serama chicks, and they are so sweet! They get along, they are very friendly and interested in people, love being held, etc. Is this usual for the breed? I have many other chickens, from silkies to barred rocks and I definitely see a difference in behavior and temperament with these guys. They're just so sweet!

what a living doll.

My friend got young serama pullets a few years ago, and they were not mean but, not lovey dovey either They will sit on either side of her when she watches tv but don't like being held or carried. They go semi broody now and then- sitting on nothing- and running all over eating, drinking etc. and then back to their imaginary nest. Their nest is the dog's bed and they also steal his food and toys.

My little blue laced hen Ellie barely survived a hawk attack the other day. The poor thing is traumatized. Heard screeching while I was inside, I ran out and there a red-tailed hawk had her pinned with its talons. I grabbed the closest thing I saw and threw it, which made it drop the hen and leave. Thankfully she's not too injured. A few minor scratches and a bunch of missing feathers, but it's nothing that won't heal. She's still too afraid to leave the coop, but with time I think she'll be fine.

So many are lost to hawks and other predators it is good to read that one was saved.

Most of mine are as you describe; very much pets that need interaction. Very different than other breeds I have owned.

These are now mostly grown. Still like to line up on my leg as in the picture. Some like to cuddle-all like to be held and get attention. Yesterday when I was feeding them, the minute I bent over, I had a rooster and a pullet on my back and shoulders.

My hens are broody to the extreme laying six to ten eggs and then going broody. Now I'm wondering how to break that cycle of events. A shorter day?---In spring? Their nest is the dog's bed and they also steal his food and toys.

Smoothies are an important part of my breeding program. They increase feather strength.
They produce about 50/50 Silkied & some of my best birds come from smoothies.
Cameo gave me Gracie & also the five 4 month old birds which include Fifi & the micro roo Charley.

Smoothie roos are worthless to me though. I give them away.

Do Seramas dig?

I've got 2 EEs & 2 RIR, they dig which I wouldn't mind but the holes in my back yard is DEEP! I fill holes every evening & got missing dirt. I've found a good use for the empty mulch bags (refill holes); covering around my plants, areas I'm trying to regrow grass, areas that I just filled with mulch/dirt.

Enjoy my chickens but refilling the holes is getting costly, these will be sold & researching what to replace them with. More for pets, not eggs.

Yes, they dig...but I do not think the holes they dig would be as bad as what the larger breeds do.
