Just a couple more, she's lays about 1 egg every 10 to 12 days or so....??? It's not diet related so it's either age related or the fact that she's still trying to feather in...

Her body is probably just trying to get feathers in before she does too much egg laying!

Hi everyone!
Been off byc for a bit and I've missed alot!.I see a lot of talk and pics of chickens and eggs and broodys!!!! Yay! It's time of year!

For those of you who remember my little porcupine rescue her is an update on her...

She is doing great! I have had her with some full size chicks that quickly out grew her and then tried her with my other adult seramas but she was getting picked on again and was looking her brand new wing feathers so I pulled her out and put her back with the chicks again. Then a fox came to my dad's and killed his rooster and grabbed vanilla (white olive egger hen in the pic with porcupine) and broke her leg in two places by trying to pull her thru the fence.
But she had the will to survive so I brought her home and casted her leg. (fingers crossed and holding for it to heal). Then vanilla was getting depressed because she was alone so I put porcupine in with her and instantly they were the best of friends and get alone so well and vanilla started to get more motivated and has learned to hope around and stand and balance while she probs herself and can even hope up on the low roost in the picture all by herself. So both my special girls are doing really good concidering!!!!

That is fantastic! I am glad she is doing much better! Any closer pictures of her new feather growth?

Identical Cousins

The birds in these trios come from different sets of parents,
yet they look almost identical to each other.

Gracie came from the smoothie Cameo. Beverly came from the silkied Clodagh.




Gyda came from silkied Thumper. Deanna came from the smoothie Cameo.




They both constantly adopt the same weird pose where they hold their tail flat over their head like a roof.

Thank you. I think they do. I have found out that frizzle is a incomplete dominant trait where smooth and frizzle blend. I have two pullets from a prior hatch that are partially frizzle; the rump feathers stand out-not frizzled, but not normal either.

Our first Serama chick, taken yesterday. The other 2 eggs hatched this morning. We have 2 light, 1 dark. We only saw them for a second when we checked under mama (bantam Cochin). It's cold and very windy today so they are all in their dog crate inside the hen house. The crate door is open, chick feed is inside, chick waterer is next to crate door. How long can we expect to wait before they begin to venture out from under mama? I'd like to check on them, but don't want to stress anybody. I put some scrambled eggs with whole grain bread, scratch, corn and yogurt in front of mama and she ate very well. She is a broody that had to be taken off her eggs several times a day to eat/drink/poop. Very dedicated girl. I'm sure the babies are ok, but I'm nervous.

Most of my hens only get off the nest once a day.
I sometimes dip the babies beaks in water and mash on day 2 if I haven't seen them eating or drinking.
I don't know if it has prevented any problems or if it's just my own nervousness but it hasn't seemed to cause any harm.
