I was under the impression that the vaccine is only effective on day old chicks. Is that not true?

Our Seramas came to us unvaccinated, so I won't be vaccinating any other chickens that come home.

We're kind of between a rock and a hard place on this issue...

The vaccine is most effective on day old chicks before they can be exposed. This also requires quarantine of vaccinated chicks for 10 days post vaccine, to prevent exposure before the vaccine takes effect.

I think it is a neurological problem caused by either a vitamin deficiency or mal-absorbtion of vitamins...I would isolate the bird, continue multi vitamins (including E and B, make sure she eats and drinks and give her some time.

June I keep my birds on Red Cell . Ever since I use it I see that my birds are stronger and healthier . I also give save-A- chick from time of hatch for at lease two weeks from their hatch day. Red Cell has all the Vitamins the birds would need IMHO.

Thanks Ken

What I do not understand is that you are using a live vaccine and you are supposed to isolate the chicks so they are not exposed to more of Mereks until the vaccine has had time to produce the antibodies. I would think that it would be dangerous in an older bird to give them live virus. I also am just posing a question about this because I really do not know exactly how this works. I'm leaning toward not vaccinating and trying to keep a resistant flock. It seems to me that vaccinating them is not a total guarantee. It is like giving them a mild dose to produce the antibodies..........I don't know but I know they have the same problems with the horses being carriers of things that they do not exhibit.

Artsy, what were to treating them for--spraddle legs???? SO cute.....

PS I am not uncomfortable at all discussing this in the forum because we can all benefit from each others experiences. I know this might affect me negatively from a selling point of view but eventually I will know that the birds I sell will be survivors and have the antibodies to protect them. It will just take time until I am sure that the MD has taken whatever birds could not survive it and the rest will be stronger. I will not visit anyone with chickens nor have anyone who has chickens visit me for quite a while until I am sure this is over with. I have my new years hatch in the kitchen and if they are exposed by dust or air, there is nothing I can do. It is almost impossible to quarantine them completely. It is really frustrating but everything has its bad times. How many of you have had a flock destroyed by a predator or wiped out by a failure of power, etc.
I wish us all a great 2012 for our chickens. I enjoy them too much to let all this deter me.
