In the Brooder
We have 5 one year old hens: 2 Americana, 1 lavender Orpington, 1 leg horn and 1 barnevelder.
Since early February I haven’t gotten a single from the Americanas. We chalked it up to cold weather and not much sunlight. Even though the other girls were laying in full force and we keep a heat light for temps under 40 degrees.
They’re seemingly healthy happy girls. They’ll even help sit on the other hens eggs.
We free range them for about 2 hrs a day one of us usually babysits them to be sure nothing picks them off as we live deep in the woods. So we know they’re not hiding eggs.
We did have one episode of the leghorn eating eggs back in the winter but haven’t seen any evidence of that since.
Not sure whats going on with my girls. we’ll keep them even if they never lay another egg. They’re my daughter’s favorite chickens (let’s be real they’re all her favorites lol). But I would like to know what’s going on with them.
