Well, that answered ONE of my questions! Thank you. I also want to take out the vent holes and cover with hardware cloth in addition to cutting a vent across the back and covering it with hardware cloth too.I have an Amish made coop and I did cut a few extra vents into it (the company would do it for me but it cost extra and I figured it would be easy to do myself.) I also made a screen door for the summer. It worked out great. I love my coop.
My other question related to installing an automatic door. I'm a bit of a dumb cluck and don't want to get up in the wee hours of the a.m. We were looking at a Universal Automatic Door because it opened horizontally rather than vertically. Due to the orientation of the coop I'd like to put it in the man door, so their main entry/exit would the clean out door too. Has anyone ever made they type of modifications to the Amish style coop?
The coop will be located about 6-8 from the back of the garage (which is attached to the house) and for the time being, they'll be free-ranging (good-bye hostas!) I'm also going to try to get roosts/perches, sheltered eating areas, dust baths and interesting nooks and crannies for them to explore.
