I've already lost one 3 year old Bovan to this awful condition and a second is just beginning to follow her trajectory. My hope is to attempt treatment with antibiotics, a very broad spectrum form, amoxicillin. I have 500mg capsules I intend to suspend in some sort of runny paste, taking care to measure precisely to obtain a 30mg/ml dose and syringe orally like vermifuge 3 times a day, 30mg/kg.

Could I ask those here if any have a problem with this plan?

Amoxicillin dose for chickens is 125 mg/kg twice a day. If mine I would treat with Baytril (enrofloxacin) because it's better for this type of infection.

Thank you casportpony. I will double the dosage for the balance of treatment period(7 days). After three days at 50mg x 3 per day she is steadily improving. Local vet up here refuses to give antibiotics to hens under any circumstance. I'll get around such idiocy eventually and Amoxicillin is all I had on hand. I now have some alternatives should it become necessary.

An update: thanks again casportpony. 125mg/kg x 2 per day has shown good results. FYI, I have found yogurt to be an excellent suspension for amoxicillin, which does not bind with calcium. My only concern was the active cultures decreasing efficacy, but if there is any reduction it appears inconsequential.

I saved one but lost the other. Fact is antibiotics are useless once impaction gets established. It's a cruel tradeoff that's made to get copious egg production -- unless one plans to convert these birds into packaged meat just before they switch off. What a dreadful experience. Has almost put me off keeping chickens to be honest, but my remaining two hens will need company.
