Has anyone successfully amputated a chicken from hip on? We had one attacked last night and it leaves me wondering if we should go ahead and amputate or kull. She was standing on her good leg and hopping around. I suspect some of that was endorphins. Any advice?

This is one of those "nothing to lose" moments. The chicken will die if you don't but if you do amputate, she has a chance of surviving, and if she dies, you would have at least made the attempt to save her.

Treat for shock first, glucose and electrolytes to stabilize her. Continue to give fluids to prevent further shock. I would simply severe the femur toward the top in a spot where the tissue is still intact so it can be wrapped around the stump. Use lots of antibiotic ointment as a "glue" to secure the tissue over the bone stump. Then slap a non-stick gauze pad over it and bandage with Vetrap.

I have a turkey poult that's the same thing has happened too but the racoon did the amputating for me. Poor thing. I have been treating her and she's been eating and drinking well.
