An Angel's purpose

That night, Sky hardly slept. She would get up, drink a little water and lie back down. Not even Sebastian's warmth or his hesrt beating beside her could lull her to sleep.
Eventually, through some miracle, she nodded off.
But her sleep wasn't dreamless. It was tormented by nightmares. She was sub-consciously reminicizing about the past.
It was what changed her.

She'd just gone out for a walk, only a year ago. It was in the dead winter, snow covered the ground. She had gone into town and passed a couple of suspicious alleyways on her way to the market.
The next thing she could remember was being gagged, blinded and pushed against a wall. The blindfold fell to the ground, and she was chained. Groping for air and eyes full of fear, she looked around.
Red hair...
Black shoes...
Those four
drastic
bitter
steps.
And the snarl of a chainsaw.
That's what she could remember.
An arc of crimson slashed the sky, as a blade roared through her skin, breaking open blood vessels. She could hardly breathe and was now bleeding.
Crimson stained the snow beneath her as she struggled. Furled into her hands were chains, holding her back.
Crimson.
That's all she could see.
The chainsaw roared, threatening to finish her.
Then there was black. Something had dashed in front of her and merely pushed the chainsaw away. It had kicked the creature in the gut and slugged it in the jaw, sending it flying back into it's own blade.
It turned to her, removing the chains and ungagging her.
It's eyes were crimson.
Crimson.
Beaming right into her.
It grabbed it's glove in it's teeth and removed it.
A pentagram, the mark of the devil.
It took ahold of her left hand, and leaned toward her.
"I can't let you suffer."
And then there was the chainsaw again, chopping her skin, and the bloody battle between two creatures following.

***
She gasped, bolting upright and clutching her heart. In an instant, arms were wrapped around her and she was embraced tightly.
"S-Sebastian...?"
"I can't let you suffer."
