Like the sound of leather too! But Oh my Goodness.. when Dirty Jobs did the bit about tanning... ugggg... ranks as one of or THE grossest job ever!
Can I just trade you for yours?
Ps- Did I cover Andalusians, or anything really, when I said Basque-type horses? I wrote it thinking Andalusians and Pasos... but I wasn't sure of what I was typing!
Next we need a saddle maker! Oh, how I would love to learn to do that! But it is an art.. and I'm not very artistic..

First I am working on getting a farm here is my list that I have started
1. Chickens different duel propose for eggs and meat
2. ducks and geese, turkeys
3. Mini-cow for milk, cheese, butter
4. goats to help clear brush and milk Pigs, horse or some animal for pulling and using in the fields. maybe even use the cows for this.
5. seeds for veggies and all types of fruit and berry trees and bushes. I would use sugar beets for sugar.
6. seeds for feed to grow for winter
7. I am thinking of sheep now
8. Windmills for wind power,
9. Green house to grow veggies and other items in the winter
10. Hand pump for water, well.
11. stock pile salt, oil (for lamps), wood for heat. I would also built an old fashion smoke house.
That is all I can think of right now.

A (very) small cow herd... enough for milk/cheese/butter/etc + raising the calves for meat and possibly selling any extras to neighbors (or bartering for goods/services they have that you don't) likely to choose a heritage breed, so that there's less risk of birthing problems, more natural resistance to bugs, etc because there may or may not be a vet nearby or one that you could afford.
Same for pigs, maybe even just a breeding pair and raise & sell the piglets. Again heritage breed.
Flock of poultry, eggs, chicks, and full size birds for eating and sale. Heritage, with meat/egg sex link possible combos. Chickens for sure, but likely turkeys as well. Maybe even geese and/or guineas.
Aquaponic greenhouse for vegetables (even in crappy weather or bad soil) and for producing fish or shrimp.

Quite frankly, I wouldn't want to live through a world destroying change.
I wouldn't either. Several of my nearest and dearest are insulin-dependent, and insulin goes bad in a few months even if it's refrigerated and unopened. Likewise I cannot imagine standing by helplessly as my daughter slowly suffocates without her asthma meds. Those keep on the shelf for less than a year. I'm happy to be more self-sufficient and I feel very good about providing for my family, but if society collapses I would not want to survive just to watch my dear ones die slowly (or quickly, from injury or infection).

From the research I have done so far I really like the Tamworth Hogs, but there are others. Has anyone got any experience with the Kune Kune Pigs? Or any other breed of pasture pig that fits the bill?
Just a comment on some of the gloomier aspects... I certainly understand seeing that the road ahead could be very challenging and perhaps insurmountable... however, I see that as a challenge to my skills and a test of my character. In the real world, I'd be dead already without medical intervention, so this is just a theory.
