Just for the record - my girls started laying the day after they turned 4 months old, and we didn't have boxes built yet. They chose a corner of the chicken house and all 13 of them lay there. Occasionally one or two in the apple crate that's on its side in there, but mostly just in the corner. I recently put a clean cat litter box in their corner, filled with shavings, because I would sometimes find eggs rolled out of the corner, and under the roost where they got pooped on. The girls just keep laying in the litter box and all the eggs stay put.
