Hello! My friends have an easter egger rooster and I have black star hens- any idea what breed may come from this mix? Or maybe, any idea of what color egg a hen from this cross would lay? The rooster is still too young to breed, but just curious! Maybe when my RIR’s are old enough I will breed them with their rooster as well. Hmm any thoughts?

No breed will come from that mix. An Eastern Egger is a chicken that might have some relationship to a blue or green colored egg. Their feathers can be any color or pattern, they can have any type of comb, any color of legs, be any size, and may or may not have the blue egg gene that gives you the blue or green eggs. Since that EE is a male he won't lay eggs, you won't even know if he has the blue egg gene or not.

A Black Star is not a breed, that is a marketing name for a black sex link. The mother is usually a black and white barred hen (usually a Barred Rock, Dominique, or Cuckoo Marans). The father can be one of many different breeds with different colors and patterns (Black, Red, Blue, even White in some cases).

By crossing an EE rooster of unknown genetics with a Black Star of unknown genetics you might wind up with chicks that are pretty much all one color/pattern but are much more likely to get chicks with a wide range of colors/patterns. Whatever you get they will not be a breed but a mix. I kind of like that because you never know what will hatch. That can be pretty exciting.

Thank you for all the info!! We are still pretty new to the chicken world. We got our 3 Black sex links almost a year ago and haven’t looked much into breeds/other kinds of chickens until recently. Our friends ordered about 4 different kinds and they’re all so beautiful! I love my girls, but the all black isn’t very flashy. I’d love to get some different colors in my flock. I had no idea that the roo may not necessarily have the blue egg gene, that is very interesting. thank you again!

Without knowing his background he can through any color,, I have an old guy I call a Rainbow Egger, as I cannot predict what color egg the pullets from him will lay. I get pink, brown, green, olive, blue, light blue, etc. from a single hatch between him and one hen.
I absolutely luv the feather colors I get from my EEs, like the pullet that is white with light yellow leakage (others have red or black). I have to try to get pics of her.
