They make great lifestock guardians but I highly recommend NOT getting more then one at a time. No matter what the purpose for your new family friend. You want them to bond to the chickens! NOT to each other. They are puppies and can get into trouble together.
I have 2 rescued cocker spaniels from a horrible backyard breeder who was over whelmed. I have a rescued rottwieler who was tied to a tree with a chain and was days from dieing and then a german shepherd whose mother was a foster I cared for. Both cockers can be out all day in the yard with the ladies. After 11 months with chickens the rotty is off leash with them now. She is always supervised and is a work in progress.
Just like like the shepherd puppy. There are hundreds of thousands of great dogs at the shelter waiting for a new home or for euthanasia. Personally....... that is where I would look.
My question is, is the dog going to be a chicken dog? Or a family dog and a chicken guardian? Many LGD's bark most of the night to let the predators know they are there. So, if your in the city....... that may not be the right choice.
Just this afternoon my rotty who has only been off leash with the ladies 6 times darn near took a window out growling and coming unhinged!
I looked outside and there was a huge domestic cat within 10 feet of the ladies stalking them. I let her out with the spaniels and needless to say............... that cat had to change its pants, so to speak. The ladies ran towards the house and the dogs charged the predator. Now to top it off................. ALL my dogs like cats! But, not a cat looking at their chickens.

It is easier to give you better advise if we know the cenario of what your really looking for.
