That too, but what I mean is if there's is conflict or a reason a dog that size wants to be on the other side of the fence those underground fences won't stop them. Worst case your dog gets zapped while it's trying to defend you or your flock.

Not in house yet but with litter mates and mom - right? Alone as a young pup is just going to be better in house at night for safety and bonding with you. Once the pup is bonded with you, he'll do anything to please you. Also I agree with comments that 8 weeks is way to young to bring home and on top of that, put outside alone full time?? Just no.These dogs have never been in a house so I wasn't sure if I should continue that or if it may mess it up if I bring it in for binding for a few months but this dog will ultimately be an outdoor dog.
I used to show Shelties for a breeder. I LOVE their intelligence! My horse would let my Sheltie trot alongside him but never my large breed dogs. Horses know the difference between skilled herding dogs and goof balls. I've never had a Sheltie around chickens, good to know your experience! That's how Gracie, my Sheltie was. She was a loved family member. But as she grew up, she took it on herself to guard the property and, by extension, the chickens. My birds could free range because of her. I saw her run off three coyotes once, and she'd have a fit if strange dogs came around. She didn't even tolerate squirrels. But nobody taught her anything. She just had that instinct. I miss her.
Yes i agree. I will keep him inside. I've never had a guardian dog so I wasn't sure if I should do that. I definitely want to though. I don't really have any choice but to take him at the 8 weeks. Like I said this isn't a breeder but I did get to visit the farm and he is awesome with chickens for now and I plan to take him out with mine daily. Not in house yet but with litter mates and mom - right? 8 weeks is a baby, glad you're bringing inside. Take a small stuffed toy with you and rub it on the momma dog to get her smell. Let baby pup sleep with it for comfort, it will very hard on baby, first few nights.Yes i agree. I will keep him inside. I've never had a guardian dog so I wasn't sure if I should do that.
