Hello fellow duck owners, I noticed this morning my female Ancona (Florence) has an eye that looks to be scabbed over or crusted shut. At first I thought she lost an eye, at close examination I can't tell if it's gone or just crusted over. She is behaving normal otherwise, swimming, eating, just standing and favoring her good side where she has sight. Is this something I should address right away, kind of keep an eye on (pun intended) or take her to a vet? My kids are treated VERY well, there's nothing round that would have caused the loss of an eye, no Red Ryder BB Gun etc...

I'm thinking you should get some terramycin ointment to start with and see if that helps. Take a warm cloth and clean it up good and put the ointment on it. You can get it at Tractor Supply.

You can start with rinsing the eye with warm salty water first if you want then use the Terramycin ointment. Or Veterycin eye ointment. The warm salt water 1/8 ts per I cup of water heat then cool before using but if she has something in her eye this or the Veterycin may wash it out.

Thank you all, I will start warm cloth and ointment tomorrow am. Fingers crossed, not sure where I would find a small eye patch if required. She was nervous enough tonight with my inspection so I will leave her be for the cold evening.

Good morning! After getting real close today, washing the outside of her eyelid with warm water, looks like there's no crust, just wee tiny little feathers for a lid. It feels flat, like she has no eye under the lid. I tried to gently probe the lid open, but it appeared as though there was no entry slit. I think she lost the eye somehow. Eating, drinking, laying, normal otherwise. Need to try the Terramycan tonight, she's been probed too much this morning.

I'm sorry to hear she may have lost her eye. Maybe look around for something she could have poked it on? I'd def keep a very close eye on this because of likelihood of infection. Hopefully you can work the lid open to make sure about the eye. Maybe wrap her in a large towel and rinse the eye good then hold a nice warm cloth over it.

That sounds great, 7 degrees out, I want to be wrapped in a warm towel lol. I sure will keep a close watch on my little baby. Thanks for the feedback and kind wishes.
