Hey everyone,

I’ll be going to a Critter Market in a couple weekends to acquire my 1st flock of ducklings. I am getting 4 total and plan on a WH & Saxony for sure.

There is a lady that will have mix breed ducklings from her flock of Rouen, Cayuga, Ancona, welsh harlequin, khaki Campbell. I have no idea which are the drakes and which are the hens.

My question is ...am I correct to assume if I get a duckling with the hallmark patching then it will be an Ancona mix? Is it a Dominant gene the patching?

Are their any other physical characteristics I can watch for to secure myself an Ancona Mix?

TIA

I've never had ancona mixed. I only have purebred anconas, but they wouldn't necessarily have the patching. I've seen before where someone bred a black and white ancona to a KC and half of the babies looked almost like black swedish and the other half looked like KCs. But if it were me I would look for the patching and spotted feet just to be sure. You also look for the trademark coloring on the bills as well.

Thank you for the reply!

I didn’t even think about spotting on the feet. Thanks for the tip.

What do you mean by trademark colouring on the bills? Specific color or spotting as well?

Here are 3 of my little ancona ducklings. Anconas will have the coloring in their bills.

Oh ok their bills will have that orange or brighter color. I suppose when you think about the other breeds their bills are black or black tipped.
I'm sorry. I should have been more specific. Ancona bills have the dark coloring where the bill meets the head.

I see it know that I clicked on the picture what you mean. I will add that to my growing notes to take with me to the market. Thank you!

Well update.

I managed to get myself to the lady that has Ancona mixes. There weren’t too many ducklings left but I seen this one with the patched feet and mixed bull color and took my chances. I cannot even tell you what it could be mixed with or even if it has any Ancona in it at all..

I'm definitely seeing ancona in it. Not sure what it's mixed with but definitely ancona!
