and How do I go about creating silver barnevelder?

i am very aware it wont be simlple... but thats the way I like it

I was thinking maybe crossing silver laced wyandotte over barney hen and selecting from then on until I got what I want?? Is this right?

What is recommended.. crossing F1 progeny or mating back to barney? if crossing back do I keep two lines?

Reading between the lines, the discussion of the Australian standard here http://forum.backyardpoultry.com/viewtopic.php?p=182516&sid=3cc7555c6210420ef331c0fae9c68b70 suggests they may have done it that way over there. The standard is described as calling for "Basically a silver laced Wyandotte with Barnie type . "

You are going to have to cull a bunch of the birds. If your barne are dark brown egg layers, the egg color will suffer.

Thanks for that tadkerson. NZ barneys are not so great in their dark egg laying, some lines better than others ofcourse. So that would not really be the hugest loss. I would love to select back for that later though to keep it resonable.

Our standard does call for a silver barney that is pretty much SLW colour but allows peppering. As it was said in another thread this is allowing inperfection in the "standard of perfection" which I am not a fan of. But I guess here where we are limited by small gene pool they are trying not to ask too much?
I want to breed more towards the double lacing. A SLW with barnevelder type compared with SLW, would find it hard to get a fan/breeder base any way so it would probably just dissapear after a while.

I find this duckwing thing confusing. That along with all the colours that are "the same" colour in M and F but look completely different. Like the slw (and simular) look pretty much the same (i.e novice could point them out as the same). But other colours like Partridge wyandottes, silver pencil wyandottes etc are completely different between sexes.
But then as you say to pick out the best duck wing male, and then the duck wing male in other breeds (probably some differences in the actual genetics) look the same but the females differ from the say silver barney females.

I am just thinking that the original barney male and the silver barney are not really the same type of colour pattening they would be quite different. If it were just a change in base colour, the silver boy would have lacing.

Does the male with a completly black breast in the SBarnys make nicer looking pullets than one with white through it? Or is it a matter of better looking male (or corect to the standard)?

I am aware in other breeds it can be a serious flaw for show birds

The Silver Barnevelder in Holland is double laced, in the British Standard it is Single Laced, In the Australian Standard both are allowed. Most of the breeders of Barnevelder here favour the double laced. Having said that all Barnevelders a getting rare here.

they are really buetiful birds and they are here in aus ;D
