So I say 'Hey!'. Been surfing this sight in Moraco Mole stealth mode for a couple of months, and decided it was time to man up!!

Wifey and I went out and picked up 1 week olds last week. 5 Lavender Orpingtons and 3 Splash Red Laced Wyandotes. This is the gang at 1 week old.

I think, after looking at the photo, someone's supposed to yell, "WOOT!"

We had been surfing all the Coops, and I decided what I wanted to build based on a couple of 3 examples on BYC. Of course, never having built a coop or raised chickens before, I decided to make several 'I have a better idea' modifications because, after all, I know better than ya'll. Right??

We've been in drought mode this summer, so I took my time. Went out and bought some concrete, hardware cloth, screws, nails, lumber and stain and started to paint the boards, when all of a sudden the skys opened up. Now it's been raining for 4 days, and it plans on raining at least 4 more. Don't get me wrong, I like the rain, but no one on BYC told me how fast these little critters grow!! You gotta be kidding me,,,,,I almost have enuff feathers to make a pillow!! I already built a second brooder 'cause it was obvious the mortar tub they were in was not gonna suffice for very long.

Looks like Tuesday before I can get going, so I'll just spend the weekend watching NASCAR (Which I would have done anyway, but the rain is a good excuse). I plan on thinning the 'Herd' as soon as the cackles turn to cock-a-dooble-doos, but in the mean time they're gonna need a predator-proof home. I can get this thing 90% done in a week if Mother Nature co-operates, Then I can take my time with the finish work. I guess we'll just wait and see.

Anywhoose, here I am and thanx in advance for the help this website offers.

Brian.

Welcome from another foothills dweller!

I'm home from work today because I fell HARD yesterday and hurt like the dickens. Thank you, rain, mud, and concrete steps.

I've been doing some chicken-in-the-rain watching. The ducks and geese are in heaven, of course, but they don't ever look water-logged. The chickens, on the other hand, must not care how they look. They're happily scratching for worms and bugs. I want to dry them all off, but it's enough to dry off the danged CAT which goes outside JUST TO GET WET so I will towel him dry when he comes back inside.

So you got straight run chicks? They're awfully cute. Yup, they grow incredibly fast. Hope to see you post around in the forums!
