Angel wing in ducks, & how we wrap to mend it - Pictorial

It is fun to see them correct so well so quickly. Give them a few days to get use to the change in feed.

I have a 5 week old cotton patch gosling. Angel wing on one side. Wrapped for 3 1/2 days, took the wrap off, within hours was sticking out again. I did change the feed too. Now she is only grazing on grass during the day and feed lower protien feed at night in the pen 14% protien. Re wrapped and will leave it all week this time. What to do? I hope it works this time. Im a little bummed. Support needed or feedback. thanks

Hi Jynx, leave it for a full 7-10 days so the wing has a chance to build muscle memory holding the end back in its proper location.

thanks so much. I did only wrap the wing affected. I did stop with the high protien feed (was 20% protien game bird feed) Now they are allowed to graze all day on grass, my beautiful sod LOL. I dont care as long as the babies stay healhty. Also re wrapped and hope I did it correctly, seem to fold down as the other wing was. I only wrapped the wing not against the body just the wing flat. It is holding though. Used the stretchy self adhesive flesh colored bandage like for a sprained ankle or wrist. It holds tho, even though she gets in her pan of water and runs and plays with the other babies. So keep my fingers crossed. Again thanks for your support this is why I like BYC.

My call duck which is about 5 weeks old just started to show he has angel wing about a day ago.. Would the wrap have to stay on for 7-10 days still even though its a call duck??

Picked up the mazuri maintenance today and fed them half/half of mazuri with purina start n grow. Silly things picked out all the start n grow and left the mazuri. At $40 a bag, you'd think they'd LOVE the mazuri.

I bought Countryside organics for my flock back in Dec. they wouldn't eat it, ended up mixing it with the Purina FR and finally got them to finish the bag. Picky eaters. lol

You can check at 5 days, but angel wing isn't different from one breed to the next, so it is reccomended to wrap and leave alone for the 7.

Ok I thought my duck had angel wing but..... I just went and after looking like an idiot trying to get this little duck away from his girly friend I took a better look at his wing... Is this angel wing??? Ive never seen feathers like that grow out of the bend in the wing... his left wing has it more pronounced then the right...


In the bend theres the begining of the feathers starting out... Never seen this before.. (left wing)


This wing dosent really have the starting of the feathers comming out of the bend (right wing)

Angel wing is when the wing looks like a hitch nickers thumb going 90* away from the body of the bird.

Yours just has its first feathers coming in from the appearance of the photos. Those are primary and secondary flight feathers. They are still full of blood as they grow in. The blood will recede once they are completely in.

Blood feathers can cause a wing to hang down, with a drooping effect. Plenty of outside time with room to to move and exercise the wings will allow them to strengthen the wing muscle and before you know it they tuck and hold their wing normal again.
