Animal attack

I'm afraid to say that was a raccoon. That's exactly what raccoons do - reach in, grab, and pull anything they can out. They have skinny arms and just the type of hands to do it.

You will need to find a better place for your cage. (and incidentally, they can and will open cage latches.) If you can't tonight, they leave a bright light on and a plug-in radio on a channel that plays only talk radio all n ight long without break. Then make a place where you can keep them.

I hate to seem overly negative, but the one with the missing limb probably lost a lot of blood and will be infected. If he is very active and wanting to live, you will need to give him boiled egg yolks mixed with crumbles mixed with water. But expect that he likely won't live, be glad if he does. Give him comforts in case of either living or dying.

As for the bone, if you cannot get a vet to attend, expect that the bone will probably cause infection issues. These babies are quite small. Bones like that can be cut off, muscle wrapped over and stitched, skin stitched over that, but the bone will leak air, the bone and the air and thus the respiratory tract will likely become infected, and this really requires a vet's care. Unfortunately if a bone is sticking out (not just skin scalped to the bone) it's a very hard situation to mend. particularly in young babies.

If you cannot cull yet, give them comfort, food and water, heat, dress the wounds, and separate them in a very soft clean place. And keep things nice and quiet and calm for them.

I'll say a prayer for mercy for them, you, your other babies.

As for the raccoon, please do at least live trap him. Wildlife people can relocate him if you can't dispatch him. But he will be back, and they don't kill for food. They kill because they're smart.

I'm so very sorry for your loss. It's heartbreaking.

i'm so sorry about your chicks. You've gotten some good advice, and i hope your vet can help. On your cage, how small are the holes? You probably want no larger than 1/2" hardware cloth. A raccoon could not get a hand in that small a hole.

i know you are very busy now with helping these little ones survive. But when you have a moment, perhaps you can post a picture of your set-up so we can help you with advice to make it more secure.

Good luck with your vet visit. Hope all goes well.

So very sorry this happened to you. Big hugs.

If you think of getting new ones, it might be a good idea to fortify, fortify, fortify.

Make sure nothing can get your precious babies again.

Sure hope your silkies make it, and so sorry again.

try baiting your live trap with marshmellows. dig a hole under the trap or attach a small dish and put the marshmellows in it. and a few in the trap and a few leading up to it. i've had sucess with both racoons and possums this way, and the dogs and cats should leave it alone.

I know that the possums here like sweet stuff - molasses is a big favorite. I've heard raccoons like berry jams, and I know they really like sweet white bread. So marshmallows sound perfect.
