Sorry this is a pigeon egg rather than chicken. It was brought into rescue after the nest was accidentally destroyed. I candled and it looks almost ready to hatch - shadow of the chick, clear air cell and I could see strong thick blood vessels. No movement but I only candled very briefly and the egg was a bit colder from being out of the nest.

But the shell is a greyish colour I'd usually associate with rotten eggs about to explode. And now I've noticed an expanding crack with orange fluid leaking out. Is this likely from decomposition or is there any chance something may be alive in there?

Thanks in advance

Also to add - no obviously strong smell before I put it in the incubator. I haven't lifted the lid since putting it in to check the smell.

We think we've seen it moving ever so slightly in the incubator - like a tiny wobble/quiver ever now and again - can gas from bacteria build up do that?

It seems discolored for sure. Does it smell bad? To me, don't think he'll make it😕 Looks like that is yolk coming out.

How long did the egg go without incubation?

Gas might be able to do that, I'd give it a little time to see if it's viable. @CCsGarden what do you think?

Thank you. I couldn't smell an obviously bad smell. I'm not sure how long it was between coming out of the nest and being found unfortunately - I don't think it was found straight away though, there was probably a delay of a few hours.

Okay.

Is there anything I can/should do before discarding? How long could I give it? We thought we saw a tiny bit of movement - like a little wobble when we were watching the egg before in the incubator - not sure if that's just gas trying to escape though.

It could be gas. At this point it looks like it's dead. You can give it another hour if you don't want to brake it open/ discard it just yet

If you have no one else in the incubator, I'd leave it for another half day and see if there's any progress. If none, I'd take it out and gently begin peeling away the shell, starting at the crack (do this outside) to see if there's any active veining/actual movement. It'll be a slight risk if the baby is alive, but better than accidentally discarding the chick or waiting indefinitely and having it pop in the incubator 😅
