And your point is?

Farmers and livestock people (99.99% of them anyway) have always had their animals best interest at heart despite what a lot of animal rights groups would have you believe.

Goofball. My point is that this is a good thing. Sad that it has to come down to someone passing a law to make people do it though.

And my point is that they, 99.99% of the farmers and livestock people don't need government to have them doing the right thing for their animals.....they'll keep on doing what they've been doing for years.

I think the point in it was not really about "farmers and livestock people" per say, but large corporations and businesses who have a LOT to offer, and thus do it in the cheapest way possible. Of course there are animal rights activists spying in everyone's business, complaining about everything - But yes, there are lots of businesses who don't care too much, too. Take a look at Tyson.

Oh, now if the rest of country would think the way you do! I say, keep the government out of our affairs-way out!!! And that's all I'm gonna say or this thread will be locked down!

Actually, these issues were put to the voters. Not a decision by "the government". I know Katy's point and I am glad it is that way where you are. Here in CA it is not so nice all over the place. Especially in the cattle industry.

Good point Deb and I think that the concept of doing right by animals is subjective. What one person may think is acceptable, others may find unacceptable. I dont know that having a standard is a bad thing.
I live in an area where 'breaking a horse' is exactly what it sounds like. And it isnt pretty. I've seen them dragged behind tractors to 'make 'em behave' *gulp*
And most folks here will tell ya 'That's the way we always done it'. 'Its how ya break em.'

So, since everyone isnt in the 21st century when it comes to animal care/confinement...standards are needed.

Kudos to those who are already at and above the standard!

What she said....

I found this line pretty funny...
Livestock and poultry producers argue that animal welfare is an important issue to them — that their livelihood depends on taking care of their animals.

Really??? There is a big difference between having a healthy animal for many years and just raising one to market size.
