Unfortunately this isn't my first post, as I sadly have a sick hen & luckily found this site with all its terrific forums being very useful. The people on here are amazing. I've only been on here for over a week & have a few people helping me & supporting me.
On the light side.....I'm new to chickens. Last July my mom decided to get some babies from a farm by my brothers house. They were 2 days old & mixed breed, & I fell in love immediately. We got 3 total, but ended up giving one to a great home a few months later cuz mom thought it was a rooster (she grew up with leghorns & has some experience). Finally, we discovered that another one was for sure a rooster cuz of his comb & gave him also to a good home (by the way, hard to have roosters where I live as they make a lot of noise & not "supposed" to have chickens). But I was thrilled that my little Sookie was in fact a girl. We got another to keep her company, an adorable white Silkie hen. And from people looking at my Sookie, everyone has said that ironically, she does indeed have some silkie in her. Now poor Sookie is sick, we've narrowed it down to worms, & I'm praying every day she comes out of it. Being new to having chickens I had no idea they have such personalities!! To me, Sookie is THE BEST!!! Before she got sick she loved to be around me & with me. I just had to pat my legs with my hands when kneeling, & she'd hop right up onto my lap. She loved to fly on my back, or sometimes head when I was in the run with her. & when she was roaming the backyard, I swear she came when I called her name, unless of course she just found some good bugs from scratching. So I'll definitely be a longtime member, no matter what Sookie's fate is. I just tell her I love her & pray she gets better. So, thanks from New Jersey & I'm excited to learn & meet new people.
Take care,
Natasha

Hey there, as a "chicken enthusiast" of many years and a new member I can tell you that praying alone wont solve your Sookies problems. I hate to say it but its time for medication (I am all organic and prefer NOT to use medication). What are her symptoms that makes you suspect worms? If it is the runs, loss of appetite and drop in egg production you are probably on the right track BUT if there is an odor about her then it could be something much more serious.
I raise turkeys, geese, black jersey giants, blue jersey giants, serama's, welsummers and of course show girls (what farm is complete without these psycho's) along with peacocks and ducks. If you want some more in depth help just email me and I will help you out. I HIGHLY recommend organic farming over all others if you are eating your eggs or..............stock. I have a few tricks up my sleeves that seems to work well so please dont hesitate to ask me anything. I think that all people who have raised birds have been in a similar situation and need people to turn to.
