Animal Place? They dont like back yard chickens!

I don't understand the problem with slaughtering chickens at all.

We're about to slaughter the last 4 of our Red Hens likely in the next couple weeks.

I don't agree about the vet remarks, I think if there is a vet available to you then fine go ahead but if you don't have a poultry vet available to you, or any vet that will look at chickens, what are you to do?

I can only halfway agree with the article.

I see what they are saying... I have had these fad people want my birds before they even had a coop. I don't sell to those types. There are always going to be good pet owners and bad pet owners... doesn't matter what the pet is.
I DO agree with the comments about people only refering to internet forums and workshops for veternary care of their flock. 100% I agree... it goes for people wanting hatching eggs and not doing their research first (and not just on a forum) or chicks or anything. It's one of my pet peeves too.
However, where they lose me is the whole chicks not being happy without a mother hen. I hatch eggs almost constantly. I have two broods right now... happy as could be. (and healthy as could be too)
The large hatcheries truely are just as bad as factory farms. They literally grind up left over chicks, usually roos. It is the industry standard.
Feed stores selling chicks... first, they get them from hatcheries... then ALOT of them don't care for them properly... and alot also will let you buy just one at a time leading to impulse buys by people who didn't need a chicken or duck and then on top of that don't know the first thing about them.

So, the article has it's pluses and minuses. It reminds me of that one group I can't name here... there is a type of bread that has the same name. They have good points, then they hit you with a bit of "CRAZY". The worst part being that humans should not eat meat. Well, last I checked... we are supposed to eat meat. That is why we are equipted with kanine teeth. THAT SAID... I'm totally against factory farms and the torture of animals just because they will be slaughtered soon.
I guess what I'm saying is... there is a balance to everything. Just because you eat a animal, doesn't mean it should be mistreated.

Though probably a lot of hatcheries do grind them up for your dog food and such, (plus other chicken food). Some hatcheries sell left over males at auctions I've heard.

There are always exceptions.... but I would like to know which ones. I might consider them.

Boy, do we live in a mixed up society!!!!!!!!! Some people care more for a _____ chicken than they do children.

Well, it's also inaccurate. A day-old chick IS different than an 8-week old puppy. Before hatching, chicks absorb the yolk in their egg, allowing them to go the first two days of life without food or water. It’s a survival trait – nature makes the hatchling that way so it can survive while its mother stays on the nest hatching out the rest of the clutch.

I am working on a BYC page to refute some of the arguments put forth by backyard chicken opponents. When I finish a draft, I will put up a link in this forum, asking for input, revisions, etc. My goal is to create a set of resources to counter opposition.

Thank you, WisconsinGardenChick! I'd be glad to help with editing if you need it (though from the looks of your BYC page, you've got that covered!) First we have to fend off people who don't like chickens, and now we have to fend off those who DO? Life is crazy!

Small world, WI GC! I grew up in Waukesha, Wisconsin, and my husband is from Milwaukee! Still have lots of relatives in that state, & we visit every summer at my in-laws' cottage near Shawano! What part of WI are you in?
