I see no problem buying mutt puppies from a pet store. By that I mean the ones with $50-$100 price tags, not the designer breeds. Sure maybe the dog owner should have been responible or whatever and spayed his dog but to each their own. I dont have a huge problem with dog farms, the kind that clean and feed and vet their dogs. These do exist and in my mind they are different then the places with cages stacked up, and eyes poked out. I would not like to buy one from them though because I preffer a good example of the breed with health clearances, but its not my money that other people spend. Supply and demand.
I'm not sure if it was petland, but it was one of the chain petshops, but years ago I saw a puppy that was very typey to a specific breeders line. I asked to see the pup and then asked about price and if it was registered and vaccinations. When they told me it came with registration papers I asked to see them. As far as the people knew I was looking to buy a pup. They told me that they wouldn't show me the registration papers until I purchased the pup? When I asked why they couldn't show me the papers they said that their breeders wished to remain anonymous.

Personally, the thousands upon thousands of mutt puppies that get euthanized in shelters every year is reason enough for me.
A responsible dog breeder at the very minimum is breeding dogs with a purpose in mind and doing the recommended genetic health testing for their breed. I have never seen or heard of any breeder/mill who sells to a pet store doing this.
Its really the same thing with the type of mutt puppy im talking about. The oops litters of many years ago, when you would go to a pet store 20 years ago and see. The puppy is either going to the pet store or the shelter so not much difference to the dog. Only difference is if it goes to the shelter it gets fixed for the same price. IDK I am of a different mind set, dont see some magical difference netween a dog and other types of animals. My cows have more personality then many dogs but no one would care If I bred her, sent her to auction ect. Too me, weird.

actually the tides are turning in that direction,,I know of several breeders that are doing cerf and OFA and sell to pet stores,,they are USDA breeders, have excellent stock, temperments and conformation wise, they are not in the same catagory as the ones you see on Oprha or the news, they do actually care and love their dogs,,I know this because I groom for several of them,,every 6 weeks like clockwork I show up at their kennel and most of those dogs are easier to get along with then many once a year groom needed or not pet homes.
I hate Petland.
They dont care about the puppies or any of their animals.
Puppy mills and petstores are horrible.(Mom N POp stores are usually ok)
Theres so many unwanted puppies & dogs in the world and they just add to it.
The VERY FIRST place anyone who wants to adopt a puppy/kitten/rabbit/cavy/older dog/older cat/ older bunny, .... etc. etc. etc. should check is the local animal shelter. Some people think only the mutts, the diseased, and the undesirable end up at the shelter. Not, NOT NOT TRUE!!! Animals arrive at shelters for all sorts of reasons -- divorce, death of owner, someone in the household is allergic, owner doesn't have time / energy / money etc. -- and purebreds end up in shelters just like mutts. I personally would not get one from a classified ad that says "free ___ " (puppies, kittens, rabbits, whatever) because that might allow an irresponsible owner to think it's not important to get that pet spayed or neutered because "we can give away the babies".
If you want a pet, go to a shelter, pay the fee, give them an extra donation if you can, and rejoice that you've saved a life, and just maybe have ended up with the best animal friend & companion you'll ever have. BTW, even if you're not in a position to adopt an animal, you CAN HELP FEED SHELTER ANIMALS AT NO COST TO YOU!!! Go to www.theanimalrescuesite.com and click the button each day. The clicks are counted and sponsors pay for the food. Of course, there are items you can buy and that funds even more food, but that part is strictly voluntary, there is NO requirement to purchase anything at all. There are "sister sites" for the rain forest, breast cancer, child literacy, hunger, and child health. You can click any or all. You're sitting at your computer anyway; why not invest a few seconds and make a difference?
