Animals that lay in winter

Usually birds hatched in May and June will lay through their first winter. Hatched earlier in the year and they too may go into molt. Hatched later and they may not even start before winter.

That being said some breeds handle winter laying better. I have had Australorp that laid during winter but at a reduced rate. Chanticleers are said to lay through the winter but suffer greatly in the hot summers.

Chanteclers are supposed to be good winter layers, yes. I have found whether they lay through winter greatly depends on age and what time of year they became sexually mature. For instance, it's winter here, but 4/4 of my young Leghorns lay every single day. That's because I got them early on. My pullets hatched a mere month later have yet to lay a single egg.

All my May hatched pullets lay through winter at a decreased rate regardless of breed.

This year I have 2 from last year already resume laying after the molt, a faverolle and an EE, which hatched in 2016.

I haven't found chantecler to be very good layers.
