Well then...I will tell you everything . The eggs are from my own chickens. My chicken were bought from someone(we don't know personally) who was selling them because hawks were killing them off. They are a mix of breeds. We bought them last fall. Anyway, I decided about a month or 2 ago that I wanted to hatch a few eggs, after being on this site and seeing what to look for when an egg is fertile(when it is cracked open). Anyway, one of my hens,an EE, layed smallish green eggs(just big enough for my 17 month for breakfast). After I had read on here about fertile eggs I looked and saw that the smallish eggs were fertile. Thus giving me the idea to hatch them. So my dh bought me a bator.
I will say that I had many eggs in my fridge(some, most) had been in there for 2 weeks.Oh yes, I did wash the eggs before I put them in the carton(some even soaked in warm water to wash them). Also, before setting in the bator,I brought them to room temperture.
I gave it a try. I have 2 EE hens and used their eggs and a couple of white leghorn eggs(whose mother seemed to be going broody?) Anyway, I started off with 20 eggs...and discovered over time that 8 were infertile. I put in very little water every second day. I candled every night, and sometimes during the day too. I did not monitor the humidity at all, but kept the temp steady from 99-101 .
It was an experiment to be honest,to see if I could do it. I succeded. This was my first hatch, but not my last. I guess all I can say is that I watched them closely.I am always home. I turned them 3 times a day. When it came to day 18, I put in extra water, but didn't fill it to the top of the trenches(or whatever they are called).I put my eggs in a carton and shelf liner under the carton. And there you have it...all hatched. I am very happy that they did(or I would have been heart broken). As you can see, I didn't do anything special. Ok...I'm done rambling lol

You "ARE" the EGG woMAN, koo koo kachoo!!!

You went against the grain and awesome hatch!!!

I guess fresh eggs are better than shipped by a long shot.

Having your own hens to provide eggs means they are not subjected to shipping or much mistreatment and these were second season hens, the best kind.
Having had them in the fridge is not a surprise, but isnt something you want to repeat. But you did everything right enough, with a good measure of luck tossed in it sounds like.

But you really started with 20. You got 12 hatched, but you set 20. You gotta count the duds, too! Thats a hatch rate on the entire setting of 60%. This measures overall fertilty of the eggs from your flock. Still, 12 hatched for 12 viable is pretty danged good.
Now, tell us how they hatched. Was it like little peeps a-popping all in a rush, or were there a ot of stragglers and weak sisters?

I consider a viable hatch, when the eggs are fertile and all of the fertile eggs hatch without a problem or death and very healthy babies.I don't count the infertile eggs at all, considering there is no way to tell if they are fertile except by cracking them open, and thus leaving the eggs unhatchable of course. If the 8 infertile eggs were fertile, they would have hatched too. If some of the chicks died, for any reason, I would NOT consider it 100 % hatch rate. I am not daft. I am about to set more eggs in my bator. I may not get the same luck as this hatch, but I hope I do. Although, if I don't I will tell my hatch rate even if it is 20%. I have a feeling that you don't believe me. They started to hatch at around 6am...the day before there were 8 pips(if my memory serves me correctly). They came out as any chick would. They pecked aound the top of the egg until the chick was able to come out. I watched everything. They didn't struggle, except one. He/she was the second to the last. Seemed to be having problems getting one wing out of the shell.I could see his/her lil' feet ,head and one wing. I came on this site and asked if I should assist. Anyway, I reached in the bator, quickly(because there was still one egg to hatch and had pipped),took the top part of the shell off of the baby, and tipped the bottom half so that the chick could get his/herself out. Then I closed the bator. That was in the evening. At around 1:45(I was up with my 17 month old) the last chick zipped and was born. Very fast. They all hatched pretty fast, except for the one I helped. Although the 2 leghorn chicks came out of their shells in a rush ..haha

And that's how they hatched.... and more questions??????! I have no problem answering questions, but I feel like I am being drilled. I am proud that I had a successful hatch, wasn't expecting it at all. Was even afraid when I put the eggs in teh carton and raised the humidity that I had killed them, because when I squeaked at them they didn't respond. The eggs used to shake when they weren't in the carton. Anyway, my husband and mother-inlaw say they are very impressed that I did it. I amy not be so lucky with the next hatch....who's to say. I hope I am, I can't bare the thought of a lil' helpless baby animal hurt ,sick or dieing, for any reason.

Ok I'm done.... so I had a good hatch...lots of people do....onto the next one .

Thank you so much....I don't really think I am the Egg Woman haha that's too funny. I'm not the first person who has done it and won't be the last. I was surprised that they all hatched. I wasn't expecting it at all. I hope my next hatch will be just as good. Good luck with all of yours. I think that maybe some people fuss too much over their hatch, I mean they are always worried about temps and humidity being exact....I didn't. Hen's don't(from what I can see with my broody hen). That's why I candled every day, sometimes twice,to make sure they were alive.

Well, got to go get my bator ready for another hatch. Thanks again.
