My neighbor has a new puppy. We spent the last two weekends replacing the only bad part of the fence between us. The puppy is a 6-month-old papillion who has twice gotten in our yard. The fence is fixed and while it was being worked on the chickies were locked in their run. They have been let out in the yard since we finished the fence on Saturday. Today was the third time. The puppy came under the fence from a hole he dug, luckily my son was cleaning the coop and caught him before he could get after the girls. We put large stones up where he dug in, and have at least stopped him for now. The girls are back in chickie jail.

I'm annoyed because so far we have done all the work. They have not offered to pay for the shared fence and they let the little guy out all day long when they are at work. The vet told them to crate train the dog, but they can't seem to be bothered. I feel it is not my job to keep their dog out of my yard, but their job to keep him in. I resent that I have to lock up my birds to keep them safe. By the way, the fence is a 6-foot wooden privacy fence, and should be fairly puppy proof. Do I run hardware cloth or chicken wire along the bottom of the fence to keep him out?? Why do my animals have to be shut up all day to keep them safe? Why can't they train the dog they bought? Why can't he be fat and lazy like their other dog?

ARGH, just annoyed and wanted to vent:barnie

I would keep the dog for a little while in a crate or safe room, leave a note on the door that you have the dog and need to talk to them about this or the dog is going to find itself in a new home....be nice of course.

My papillon is a house dog. She doesn't go outside except to go potty. If my birds are running around outside when Popi goes out, she gives a wide berth as my hens pick on her! I hope your girls learn to whip on that dog!

I had a neighbor like that at our old house. After we had enough, and did all we could, we crated it in our dog crate, and called the sheriffs dept. We didn't, and still don't, have animal control out where we are at. The sheriffs dept wrote them a ticket. When that didn't work.... and the dog came after one of my kids, we no longer had a problem with that dog......

I'm in suburbia and generally on good terms with this neighbor. I'll speak to them again, and luckily it is going away for Christmas. I just wish they would invest some time with the puppy. It was meant to be for my neighbor's parents, but the puppy can't go to them until he learns some manners. The parents are in their 70s and don't need a dog that jumps and won't come when called. They also are on a ranch, with cattle. Maybe a good cow kick is what the cutie needs.

If the length of the fence where he digs is not too long, or if it's only in a certain spot where he digs, you might try sinking heavy-duty barbed wire a few inches deep along the fence line. That will stop him from digging out!

Run an electric fence along the bottom a couple of inches off the ground. Zap that little thing a couple of times then he will learn that it hurts and won't come back. Keep your chickens when the fence is on of course.
