Annoying Mother Rant

Quote:
To think of all the saturdays I wasted in my room puttering around instead of cleaning it, I soon learned the rewards were good if I actually did the chores quickly.....

I'm still a kid and I have to do dishes anywhere from 1 to 2 times a day. It takes all of 5 minutes. I just shut up and get them done. I have to take out the trash whenever its needed. I also havve to feed and water all my animals which takes anywhere from an half hour to an hour. I just get the stuff done and then go have fun. I do these things everyday. Not to mention, the rooms I have to clean every now and then and cook once in awhile. Im a guy so I dont like to cook too much but its ok. I just realized instead of complaining just get it done.

Okay, stop right there . . . the best chef's in the world are men, and never is there a better treat than when my SO decides he wants to cook. It's better than being taken out to eat! Go ahead and claim not to like cooking, but don't you dare blame it on your gender, because y'all have a long history of making this a tastier world.

you might appreciate her more when you have children of your own. But hang in there spring vacation week can be quite a trial for everyone involved.

My DD is 28 and she yelled at me the other day because I didn't require her to do chores. I only worked part time when she was growing up and felt that she deserved her childhood. The only time she was made to weed the garden,do the dishes or stack the firewood was as a punishment for bad behavior. (The mind tends to reflect during mind numbing repetative work). So she tells me that she doesn't like chores now because she feels like she's being punished.

OK, im a teen who seriously sympathizes with this whole thing. But Moms work hard for years to get us ready for growing up, and its time for us to pick up some slack for our poor, aging parents. As my Dad says" you know you are grown up when you give more then you take"
If all this pep talk fails, think of when in a couple of years you can get out into the big world and live however you want. That always helps!

And in the big world you will be doing ALL of the chores ALL of the time.

The best thing my parents ever did for me was make me do chores. At age 12 my mother went back to work full time. My 13 year old brother, 8 year old sister and I all went to work as well. We took over all of the clothes washing, all of the dish washing and the better part of the cleaning chores. We had a week of each (dishes, laundry, cleaning) and they rotated. My sister and I combined our weeks because it was more fun and easier to do it together (I still hate folding sheets by myself!). But between the three of us we still did ALL of the laundry, ALL of the dishes, ALL of the bathroom cleaning, ALL of the dusting and ALL of the vacuuming ALL of the time. Mom and Dad went to work and bought the groceries. They did the cooking until we got big enough to do some of that too. (Since my Dad is the best cook, we all preferred it when he cooked for us. The rest of us are just pitiful in comparison.) After dinner, Mom and Dad would get up, go to the den and read the paper/watch TV/read a book/etc. We did the cleanup. Did it look like they were just playing? Yup. Were they? Nope. They were resting after a hard day of work. A hard lifetime of work.

As an adult, I know how to run a house. I can cook and clean and do it all. Do I like to do it? No. Did I like it then? Nope. Did I just suck it up and do it? I do and I did. It's just life.
Unless your mom is Mommy Dearest, you too should just suck it up and do the chores. Someday maybe you'll have kids and you can gleefully pass the joy on to them.
