My front porch flock made up of two hens, a rooster and thirteen chicks is demonstrating another advantage of having dad around. Normally when juveniles move around in intermingling groups, groups made up of larger / older birds dominate and displace the smaller birds. When dad is around, he drives off juveniles not of his flock enabling his to have first access to whatever resources are in contention. More resources may mean faster growth and better odds of surviving.
