So, this morning I went out and found my 3yr old Buff Orp hen sitting on the ground, head straight ahead, acting paralyzed almost, except for the fact she is shaking/shivering, and barely blinking. There aren't any wounds or scrapes, nothing at all seems wrong except she just won't move, and she shakes for about 1 minute, stops for a while, then repeats. I've put her in a box in the house, gave her some vitamins, wrapped her in some rags, and elevated her head a bit, but I have no idea what this is! Any thoughts on what to do? It isn't looking promising.

Alright, thanks for the bump chicknmania! No, before today, she was perfectly fine, running around free ranging with her buddies like always.

She didn't seem to be egg bound, but I will check again.

UPDATE:

I checked her again for egg bound, her bottom had swelled up quite a bit since the first check, so I started to get a bath ready, came back, picked her up and she
closed her eyes, her little neck slumped to one side and she died in my hands.

If it really was egg bound, and she was fine yesterday, would she have died that quickly?

I am so sorry for your loss, Thank goodness I haven't had to deal with that issue and hope I never do so can't really say if it could happen that quick. Hope someone will be here soon to give you some answers.

Chickenluv, I'm so sorry for your loss. I, too, felt it sounded like she was in shock. Do you know when the last egg was laid? They can become eggbound and if the egg breaks internally, it can cause infection and eventual death, but it takes some time...maybe a week or longer (I'm just not sure how long). If you can, it would be good to do an autopsy so you can learn from this (I'm sorry if that offends you - not my intention at all).

THat's too bad, my sympathies. But yes, I agree, get a necropsy done if you can. Valuable
information can be learned from those, and if it ever happens again you will know. Here
in OHio we hae to ask a vet for a referral for a necropsy, which they will do, but the
State charges to do one. Lots of States will do them for free though, or just a small cost.
AT least, that's what I've heard.
