Another con with State testing in schools

This year the brainiacs at the kids school decided that they were instituting mandatory before school tutoring for the TAKS test (Texas state tests). If the student misses a session they are given detention. Detention is going to tutoring after school. Excuse me but if the teachers can't teach what the students need to know to pass the test during the regular school day which here is from 8:20 to 3:55 they don't deserve to be teachers in the first place. Since when can they institute mandatory off school hours attendance and mandatory punishment if one session is missed especially without informing the parents of their intent first. As tired as I am of the issue of homework the things that are on the test need to be taught in class as well and homework can be given to help cover those things along with their other assignments. If something is done before or after hours it is extra curricular and OPTIONAL. Detention is for bad behavior not for not attending something that is not during school hours.

I don't know how they can enforce something like that. A lot of kids ride the bus to and from school. I would be PO'd if they tried pulling that stunt at my school.....

Oh I'll tell you how. If they don't go to tutoring there's the threat of detention. If they don't go to detention they would more than likely ban them from the prom. As it is if the student owes the school a dollar they won't let them into the prom even if they've already paid to go. And this is a school district that falls into the Provision 2 of the school lunch program. The whole school gets breakfast and lunch on the government. It's a ridiculous program as well.

The good news is next year is his senior year and I don't remember seniors doing testing. I would go fight this crap if I knew they wouldn't mess with the prom as a punishment. I had a meeting last week at the school and if I had known then they would have gotten an ear full.

You can thank unions, politicians, federal involvement in schools, out of control administration and agenda driven curriculum for the star of our public schools.
It's time for schools to get back to reading, writing and arithmetic and drop the rest of this nonsense!

Amen Albert!!! As a school teacher, it's frustrating beyond description to see what they are doing to our schools and our children. The consequences are going to be devastating.

Amen to that. You know our district which is composed of 4 school has an administrator who's full time position is the procurement of federal funding. The district has the lunch program running all summer long. Since when is it the taxpayers responsibility to feed other peoples children especially when school isn't even in session?

I just want my kids to have a good education. I attended public school (BEFORE all of the lottery money and federal money) in classrooms of 30 or more students and I still received a top-notch education. The schools still had money for music and sports! Here in Iowa, 50 percent of my property tax plus federal money plus lottery revenues isn't enough. I just don't get it. Sorry about the rant but I have four school aged kids and this hits close to home for me.
