So, our Buffy has been laying every day except one for the last week. Today she sat in the nest box for two hours (not unusual for her) looking and sounding like she was going to lay, but then walked away without laying. She walked out into the run, flew up to an outside roost, let loose a large poop and now has forgotten all about laying an egg. So, here's the weird question...and perhaps I should take another look at egg anatomy...but if there was an egg working it's way out, would she have been able to poop? And would she have a reason for all the other behavior if there wasn't an egg in the making? The one day she did not lay previously she didn't go through the setting and the singing. Thanks.
(I should make clear that she is 21 weeks and is new to laying within the last week)

As far as I know, the egg and the poop come down different chutes, they just use the same opening. Not sure why she'd be sitting in the nest box so long. I'm new at this, - still waiting for the first egg (now 16 weeks and 2 days).

The egg won't close off the "poop chute" until just before it is layed. She will likely not be a "regular" egg layer for a bit... until she gets used to it. Who knows, you might even get a double yolker tomorrow. Not to worry, she will sort herself out.

Thank you. I spend way too much time analyzing my chicken's behavior
