Another duck gone!

Oh!

I just saw this. I'm so sorry.

Raccoons can go over fences and squeeze through amazingly small spaces. They often just eat a part. A hot wire would help with that, but not if it was a hawk. Was this a daytime or nighttime attack? Hawks are most active at dawn and dusk, but can hunt anytime. Perhaps you can confine them to a covered run while you are gone and just let them out to their pond when you are there with them.

So sorry for your losses. I know how special your ducks are to you.

Yesterday's attach was at dusk. Who knows when it/they got Uno.

The missing eggs would not be explained by a hawk or owl, but the girls are really sporadic now. The weather has been total crap until today.

Would a racoon and a skunk share a territory? I know we have a skunk ::phewwwweee!!!:: It got the neighbor's dog last week.

They could share territory. We have both on our property.

I had devestating duck losses this spring thanks to a raccoon attack in my coop and the girls were so traumatized that they stopped laying completely for a solid month.

Thanks again everyone.

I was able to get bird netting from Lowes and put together a make-shift aviary in the herb garden. It looks a bit "redneck", but it will work for now. As time and budget allows, I can add a nice looking archway with an entrance in between the shed and the grape arbor and another archway on the far left of the herb garden. These are the only two places that have the REAL redneck look

The ducks are a bit miffed they can't get to the pond, but once I find them a kiddie pool, I am sure I will be forgiven.

Last night while I was hanging up netting near dusk, a large bird started to swoop towards the ducks, saw me and then took off. Looks like the winged predator theory is holding up, but only time will tell. I am not totally excluding raccoons or that darn skunk as potential perps. Additional fortifications to the aviary will be added money permitting.

Hopefully you can find a kiddie pool. If not they have those under the bed storage totes that are smaller but at least it would allow something for them to use! Sorry for your loss, and hoping the netting helps! It's just a reminder to all of us, it can happen to anyone of us!!

I have used the under bed totes before.

They are a bit of a pain when they freeze though. I split this one

You consider predators when you are in the woods or out on the prairie. Not so much in suburbia. I thought my biggest problem would be a stray dog

P.S. I shouldn't have posted that picture. Those are Uno's parents!
