My 2 sons are 7 and 5 years old. They like to go into the chicken run and just sit and watch the chickens. This would be no problem, except for the fact that I also have a wonderful German Shepherd that has a very strong prey drive. She is a great dog and is very protective of my boys, but she has a very hard time controlling herself anytime a small animal is running or moving quickly. When my boys opened the door to the run Heidi, the German Shepherd, ran past them and got into the run. All of the hens ran into the coop and the rooster fought her until they could get away. I heard the ruckus from inside the house and ran outside in time to get Heidi off of the rooster. She had him pinned and was about to kill him, but I was able to stop it in time. He was a little shook up, but otherwise unharmed. Heidi, on the other hand, had a big chunk of fur and hide missing from her rear hip. Evidently the rooster had put up quite a fight. My boys were scared to death because they love the dog and the chickens. Obviously, they were instructed to NEVER open the door to the run unless their mom or I was out there with them. I don't think it's a mistake they'll make again, but I was very proud of the young rooster (9 months old) for standing his ground and defending his hens.

He should get a medal...

Whew, what a close call. Bet your poor little ones were scared to death! I'm so happy that your brave little roo didn't get injured.

They were scared to death. My first instinct immediately following all of the excitement was to fuss at them, but they were so upset that I couldn't. I had to let them and myself calm down a little bit and then just talk very softly to them. My 7 year old wants to be grown so badly that he hardly ever cries, and even he had tears in his eyes. I felt so sorry for them. As for a medal for the rooster, he certainly deserves one. I will say that the dog hasn't been nearly as interested in getting back in the pen since then.
