Another hatch from the class, but doesn't look too good (pic)

Ok,, an update. We had four eggs rocking violently in the classroom on Thursday, Friday they slowed down. Since I can't be there to regulate the classroom temp and they seemed close to hatching I brought everyone home. No action yesterday, and since Friday was 21 days I got worried. At midnight I gave in an candled them, 1 showed a little heartbeat but a big bloody spot on the side. Two showed a little action in there and 1 showed nothing. Got up this morning, nothing. Went to breakfast and when I got home the one that showed no movement at all has a pip. Today is day 23 for them. The bator was holding steady in the class but the homemade cooler/hatcher had issues. After we moved them we had trouble keeping the temp and humidity regulated. I'm hoping we get at least this one more to hatch.

Hows the bump on the first chick doing?

The egg that was on day 24 today did finally hatch and seems very strong and very noisy but I'm very concerned about something at it's rear. It looked like a yellow glob hanging there but now it's bloody. The chick is still moving but it also got stuck on it's back and I had to roll it over. It is very vocal and isn't struggling to breath or anything, just that yucky stuff at it's rear. I'm trying to upload pics and photobucket isn't working for me. If I don't get them on tonight and it lives through the night, I'll post them from school tomorrow.

You can see some of the yellow on the rear, this is before it became bloody.

Well, Kate, there's really nothing you can do but wait and see on this baby. The navel is still open some and it will close or it won't, but at this stage, we are all a bit helpless. It's really up to the little one now.

kate,

24 days? are your temps and humidity constant as these mixed large breed birds hatch on day 20-21 for me like clockwork, i do run temps a little high due to the seramas in the same incubator, but i have never had a 24 day hatch on chickens? .. i will send you some more very soon, and don't worry with the yolk, it looks like a delayed hatch and will correct itself with time, it will be running around driving you crazy shortly .. pm me with your shipping address please...

Frank I was surprised to but I put it down to the abuse they suffered during shipment and the issues we had with the hatcher in class. During the 19 days in the incubator the temps and humidity were constant. After we moved them to the hatcher we started having the issues with the temp being great but the humidity being low. We would get the humidity up but the temp would go up too, it was drastic changes but enough. Since the first chick came early and the other eggs were rocking I thought they would hatch on time. The two that were rocking are on day 23 today and getting weaker now with no pipping. The one that hatched today never showed any movement until it pipped and then started knocking out huge chunks. It didn't zip the egg, it made a big hole and then fought for about 3 hours to enlarge it. It's drying off and starting to try and sit up, but it hasn't opened it's eyes. It moves around a lot though. If it can live on "want to" it will. We'll see in the morning I guess. PM on the way.
