Another Massive Easter Egger Sexing Post!

My guess is: 1-2-3-6-12-13-17-18-20-22 are pullets. The rest are cockerals. I have wheaten colored EE's and none of the roosters have been wheaten colored. # 23 ( if it is a cockeral) will be a very pretty rooster.

I'm very excited about 23 as well, he was temporarily named "Blue Calico" until I could see more of his coloring, was a gorgeous little chick.

This is a photo I took that actually highlights the gender disparity within color combinations; sex-wise, from top to bottom, they are: cockerel, pullet, cockerel, pullet.

The gold-headed brown-bodied chicks can occur as both cockerels and pullets, but the cockerels get dark red splotches and the females retain a light dun-brown partridge look.

With the black and white color pattern, males have black or white heads with large, uneven splotches of black and white coloring across the body. Females have either white or black heads, with an even flow of color down the body, no odd patches of color, and distinctly-patterned feathers.

So even if you can't tell gender based on comb, you can usually guess based on coloration.

Thanks again for the guesses, I love staring at photos trying to analyze different aspects of the chickens and wondering if they're cockerels or pullets

Nice thread, nice pictures, and great learning for us newbies. Please repost pics in a few weeks as recommended, I'd love to see their progress. And, do them in the same order, if you can figure that out! LoL... we like to keep ya busy!

Good Luck with your beautiful flock!

Thank you! Glad you've enjoyed the posts and stories. I will definitely keep those photos numbered. I'm having such a blast keeping chickens!

More little fuzzies on the way, this time all pullets. All but 3 of the definite boys are going out in the bachelor pasture pen next week to give the girls (and some very special cockerels) more room in the coop (which is FAR from water proof, and we've been having rain storms all winter

Are the new fuzzies on the way more EE's? I ordered my small flock too from Meyer. Was very happy, had no issues except one of my girls turned out to be a roo. It was my COlumbian Wyandotte. I got 2 each of 5 different breeds. I'm thinking of getting another small flock for the spring, and am trying to look on Craigslist for a used shed, the coops are so expensive!

Love your signature, "the year of the egg," good luck! How old are they??

So far I REALLY like Meyer, especially after hearing so many horror stories about other hatcheries. My new batch is 25 sexed pullet Easter Eggers, from Meyer again

Can't wait for those blue or green eggs (I have high hopes for blue egg color after seeing some egg photos from Meyer pullets). 1/10 is not terrible odds on sexed birds, but still a bummer... I wouldn't want a roo after paying the premium for a pullet. Ah well.

ee's are my favorite =) im ordereing some more this year as well =p 4 and 12 are my favorites =) it looks about half and half to me too =)

Here is the update! They are about 12 weeks old now. hdowden, your guesses were 99% accurate

12 pullets and 11 cockerels out of 23. A very nice straight run from Meyer. They were all extremely stressed out for picture time; they're farm chickens, not really used to being handled, so not a lot of hope on a repeat of this kind of documentation, but it was definitely fun.

We're saving 4 and 12 as our breeder boys, all the rest are freezer-bound. Some of the flightier girls are going to be sold as layers, and the ones we keep will be bred to our Blue Ameraucana roo when they're old enough (hopefully July-August sometime).

Thanks for hanging around this thread

So cool! Thank you for the update. We have four EE "girls" that are four weeks old that we are waiting to figure out.

So pretty! I love the coloring on #12 and #20. #15's coloring is interesting as well...what a mix of random colors!
