Another "My Ducks Aren't Laying Yet" Thread

I am told drakes show no interest in free choice shell on the side. I have never seen Bean go after it.

At the same time, some of my ducks do not follow the rules.

I would set some out and watch.

Haha, I did offer them some crushed egg shell, and NONE of them had any interest whatsoever. If I remember correctly, Pyrrhos, Nyx, and Eris pecked at it a little, but that's it. They were mostly staring at it like "What is this??" No one was even chirping or talking like they usually do.

Our drake is the first to go after egg shell when I throw some in their pen! He's not one to follow the rules!

Haha, don't worry, mine don't follow rules, either. Pyrrhos doesn't seem to realize that you're supposed to stay *away* from big wolf-looking dogs, not pull on their tails.

Yes, she did actually pull on my dog's (Akita/Husky mix) tail.

So far my drakes do not seem to be touching it. They did certainly investigate it when I first put it out, but that's it. The ducks are using it. Just not very much. At this rate my 50 lb. bag will last a few years. Does the oyster shell go bad over time? It is stored in a dry place.

Chris.

My concern would be to make sure the oyster shell remains dry. Moisture can lead to mold....which is not good. Doesn"t affect the oystershell, but the shell can be a substrate for mold development.

Check. Dry place it is.

My cayuga has decided to contribute to the table as well. I got my first "black" egg this morning. Things are looking up around here. Ducks are so much fun to have around. I can't wait until they are all laying.

Chris.
