Hello :)

We (husband and I) moved to 5 acres about 1 month ago and we got our first chickens about 2 weeks ago. We have 10 hens (8 Isa Brown, 2 RIR) and 1 rooster (Australorp).

I really want to breed heritage chickens but as we are just starting out we just purchased commercial hens locally.... and I instantly fell in love with keeping chickens 🥰 (as I always thought I would, we have wanted to get some for so long!).

They really bring us so much happiness and they make us laugh many times a day with their antics. The hens were apparently free range but they must have been in a free-range barn as they wouldn't venture into any uncovered areas at first, so I take them on daily walks around the property now (coaxing them with treats) and they are finally starting to do it on their own more :)

We decided to get the rooster after about one week of having the hens as we read he would help protect them free-ranging, and they have definitely gained a lot of confidence since he arrived.

So far I really love our two RIR girls, they are really outgoing and friendly, and one of our Isa Browns is a little sweetheart (she might be a cross as she has much more white than the other hens), but I haven’t found the other Isa girls to be very affectionate, but in saying that they are interactive and will follow us around (just not as much as the 2 RIR’s).

We are still getting to know our Rooster, we were pretty nervous about getting one but he is doing a great job with the girls and they all hit it off beautifully from day one. We haven't been able to gain his trust as quickly as we did with the hens but we figure his job is to be cautious so hopefully in time he will come around.

I really want to learn as much as I possibly can about the different breeds and then someday breed one or two heritage breeds.

Well, I could probably ramble on all day about my chickens so I’ll stop myself there lol.

Looking forward to 'meeting' everyone and hearing about your chickens :))

I LOVE the visual image of you walking your chickens around the property to help build their confidence! What a good chicken parent you are!

Clearly, you've already discovered the differences in personalities, even among the same breed. Getting to know each bird is a sweet adventure.

Welcome to BYC; I think you will be a great addition to our flock!
