Greetings from far west Texas!
My wife and I got some chickens for the first time in April, adding them to the crew here of dog, cats and the occasional grandchild.

We just have 3 for now and they are 16 weeks. Honestly I don't remember the breeds of the red one or the black one, but the 3rd is an Araucana.

We are really enjoying having them and wonder why we never got any sooner. I'm here at BYC to learn so we take the best care of them and do the right things. I've already learned a lot from you guys so thanks!

Hello. EC and welcome to BYC - thanks for joining us.

Here’s a link to the Articles section - https://www.backyardchickens.com/articles/ There you’ll find lots of information on almost every aspect of keeping chickens - from coop building ideas, to incubating eggs.

You'll find lots of info in the Learning Centre and if you have a specific topic in mind, just type it in the search box - there's a wealth of information on past and present threads.

Each week, various topics are discussed, which can also be a great resource - https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/topic-of-the-week-thread-archive

You may wish to consider joining your state thread as it will put you in touch with other BYC members in your area - http://www.backyardchickens.com/t/270925/find-your-states-thread#post_3239224

Howdy all and thanks for the warm welcome! Happy to be here. I'll definitely check out the articles. I already have a question and am uncertain which forum to post it to if I don't find an answer in the links.

We just have a kit coop for the girls for now. They free range during the day so it's really just to keep them safe at night (and I took measures to predator-proof it which hopefully will work). It says it's suitable for 5 chickens but since we only have 3 it seems to be enough room for them when they're in there. It has 3 nesting boxes and since they were pooping in them I cleaned them out and blocked them off so they'll stay reasonably clean for when they start looking for a place to lay. I basically put boards over them and they are sleeping on top of those boards. My question is: Should I unblock the nesting boxes soon (they are about 16 weeks) or wait until I see an egg or two?

(And if this were to be asked in a different forum, which would be the appropriate one?)

I'll work on an avatar... :)
Thanks!
