My name is Kim, and I have a large family, and we are trying to be as self-sustaining as possible. I am pretty comfortable in forums, I try to bring the funny, and I know ZERO about raising chicks, aside from the dozen my husband declared will be coming to live with us in a couple weeks. Needless to say, I'm here to lurk and suck the information from yer thredz.

Welcome! I am also new to BYC so from one egg to another welcome. What kind of chickens are you getting?

Welcome! This is the perfect place to find any and all information you might need :) good luck with your dozen peepers and I hope you love your fuzzies as much as the rest of us.

Thanks! And I have no clue.. I can't remember what our friend told me. They are parents whose kiddo goes to preschool with my son, and they just have too many. When this next batch hatches they are sending them our way. He told me what kind, but he also said they are cross bred. Pretty casual folks. The eggs we get from them are all different colors.. Does that mean anything?

I'm sure I will. I love animals in general. My goal is some layers, and then some broilers.. along with a sheep and a pig, but that's for another forum, no?

Yip. Probably what the call Easter Eggers or Ameraucanas. Ive never had any but they are pretty and from what I know..timid. They will be great. Feel free to ask any questions you like. The only stupid question is the one unasked!

Well, I've found good information on goats here on BYC so who knows? If I have a question I just search it ;) sounds like you might have americanas ( also known as Easter eggers) on the way. They lay all different colored eggs. Locally hatched chicks are a great way to go as it seems the hatchery birds are pretty well stressed out by the time you get them. I hatch my own with broody hens and occasionally get hatchery birds through local farm supply stores or fellow chicken lovers who have ordered too many. I LOVE hatching my own. It's quite addicting.

I had to laugh when I saw the timid and Americana in the same sentence. Just goes to show we all have different experiences. I started out with americanas and still keep a few. I keep minis now though as I switched to bantam birds. It seems every chicken has its own personality.

Yeah, I have a friend with EE's and they are timid but she treats them like babies. Maybe our birds take on our personalities. If so I am in trouble. LOL

Hello from Oregon & welcome to BYC :) Tons of info on here about chicks and other animals
