Hi Everyone! I'm just getting started with chickens, I've wanted them for such a long time. I bought all the stuff for the new chicks and was about to buy them when .... I found out a friend needs to move so I'm inheriting 5 hens to come to the house tomorrow afternoon. Getting everything ready for the ladies now. Any advice on getting them comfortable in their new house? We currently have 3 horses, 2 goats, 2 dogs, 3 cats and a guinea pig. Can't wait for the ladies to get here, pictures soon.

I know there's some other people from Acton out there. I would love to know who you are :)

Be sure to check out the helpful links attached. Make yourself at home and we are here to help. Good luck with your hens!! As far as making them feel comforable, make sure they have a clean, comfy living area with water, food, etc. You may also want to add some unpasteurized, organic apple cider vinegar to the water to help boost the hens' health and immunity.

Again, welcome!

Welcome to BYC!

Congrats on the instant flock! Just go easy with them for a couple weeks. Move slowly around them. Don't pick them up much at first as this can stress them. Put some fake eggs in the nest boxes so they know where you want them to lay. They will probably stop laying for a couple weeks. Oh, and go sit with them on their level with some treats every day. Toss some out around you so they associate you with pleasant experiences. Food is a wonderful bonding agent. Pretty soon they will be comfortable with you.

Also, lock them in the coop for a couple days and don't let them out. This will help them learn where home is and will return to the coop each night. If you don't do this, you will have a hard time getting them in the coop and laying there as well. You have to train them to know where home is.

Good luck with your new hens and welcome to our flock!
